ABOUT

Maximus Chan (b. 2000) is a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist hailing from San Diego. He aims to merge realms with his music, drawing inspiration from multiple genres. As an artist, being eclectic is an important quality to him.

The goal of Max's work is to weave a narrative into the music. He firmly believes that music can tell the the stories that words can't; if words can tell it, music can go even further. He weaves intuitive expression into his music. In 2021, he scored the student films The Model Roommate (Jordan Odom) and Crossroads (Michael Haggerty). He also worked with choreographer Michael Naffier to compose Spirals, an exploration of "...setbacks as a way forward rather than a regression." Max conveyed the expression of these ideas through the composition.

In 2022, Max continued to work across disciplines, writing and producing the theme song for Forward Together, a podcast hosted by Lisa Ling and produced by the L.A. City Human Relations Commission and the USC Annenberg School of Journalism. In May, the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS) premiered his piece for concert band, Triumph. He was commissioned to write the work in celebration of the organization's 75th anniversary. Most recently, he re-scored the animation Dawn of the Patriarchy (Teagan Wells) as a part of the filmUSiC project in November, providing a score to enhance the film's movement, color, and tone.

During his time at USC, Max studied under composers Frank Ticheli, Veronika Krausas, and Andrew Norman. He gave his composition recital in February 2023 with the help of 19 performers. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Composition in 2023. He served as a Trombone Squad Leader and performer at sporting events with the USC Trojan Marching Band.

Max is currently working on a score for a thrilling animated short. He is also employed at Music Reports, Inc. as a Research Assistant on the per-program licensing (PPL) team.
